In Greece today, going back to school may seem like a return to normalcy for the country’s Jewish students.
But with the ripple effects of one of the worst financial crises in European history multiplied by declining communal donations, fewer volunteers and surging anti-Semitism, Federation partner JDC is working hard behind the scenes to keep Athens' only Jewish school running smoothly for the tight-knit community of 2,500.
“The services and quality of education provided in our school – as far as we are concerned, no changes will be made. The community is working very hard at that,” said Taly Mair, the Athens community's director. “The fact that we are supported by JDC … gives us strength and optimism, making us feel that we are not alone. And hopefully, we never will be.”
