Since 2018, the year that saw the deadliest antisemitic attack in US history at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue, the Jewish community has seen a $750 million investment in its security thanks to LiveSecure and the Nonprofit Security Grant Program.
During that same period, the annual investment in Jewish security has grown nine-fold.
“At this 2024 General Assembly we can note with pride the completion of the first phase of the strategy we call LiveSecure, our effort to assist every Federation in building or expanding a professionally run community security initiative that serves as the umbrella for every Jewish institution in its community, and our partnership with SCN to help build and support these programs,” said Julie Platt, Chair of Jewish Federations of North America and former chair of LiveSecure.
While just a handful of Jewish communities in 2018 had Community Security Initiatives with a fulltime professional that adhered to agreed-upon best practices and standars18, today these initiatives exist in 130 Jewish communities.
Jewish Federations data shows that 76% of Jews feel physically safe in local Jewish organizations and spaces, which is a remarkable figure given the sharp spike in antisemitism we’ve experienced this past year.
But that number is still not high enough. Feeling safe is a prerequisite for Jewish communities to flourish, and we will continue working to ensure that everyone can feel secure when they are participating in our community.
