The Suzanne & Allan Cohn B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Program is an investment in and for local Jewish teens. It helps empower our youth to become changemakers in their community. B’nai Tzedek (children of righteousness) allows teens to be active donors to causes they believe in. At the same time, they learn how to make giving decisions that embody the Jewish value of tikkun olam (repairing the world).
B’nai Tzedek is an exceptional addition to resumes and college applications. Participation within the program may be counted toward volunteer service hours and/or as an extracurricular activity. Letters of recommendation are available to participants.
How it works
A fund is established in a teen’s name with a $125 contribution. The Toledo Jewish Community Foundation matches this contribution, which sets the fund at $250. The Suzanne & Allan Cohn fund donates $250 for a total of $500 in the first year.
Once a year, participants allocate 5-percent of their fund to a local Jewish organization or program of their choice (see list on left side of page). They learn about local non-profit organizations through volunteer opportunities in the Jewish community and greater Toledo area.
FAQ
Q. Who is eligible to establish a fund?
A. Any Jewish teen ages 12-17 is eligible to establish a B’nai Tzedek fund.
Q. How does the fund grow?
A. Anyone can donate to a B’nai Tzedek fund at any time – on the teen’s birthday, Hanukkah, or their graduation, for example – in any amount. Each fund will receive investment income annually. As the fund grows, the amount that can be granted will also grow.
Q. How long do B’nai Tzedek funds last?
A. Participants can keep their fund until they are 20 years old. They can then donate their fund balance to support future B’nai Tzedek program participants or a Toledo Jewish organization of their choice, or they can convert their existing fund to a full donor-advised fund with a minimum balance of $2,500 through the Toledo Jewish Community Foundation. Fund holders can continue giving tzedakah from this donor-advised fund throughout their lifetime.
