Zoom 101

First, what is it?
Zoom is a web-based video conferencing tool that allows users to meet online, with or without video. You can use it to see and chat with one or more friends online or even to attend a lecture or class while at home. The basic service is free.

Getting started
Before joining a class or any meeting via Zoom, the software must be installed and an account set up.

Beyond that, there are some basic skills that are either needed or helpful, and they are very easy to acquire. To that end, we are creating step-by-step Learning Zoom manuals for you. So far, three are ready.

STEP ONE: Please download these Learning Zoom manuals

1-A) Download/install the app and account set-up click here

1-B) Log-on/Log-off click here

2) Join a meeting click here

3) Attend a meeting click here

4) Create your meeting click here

5) Invite others to your meeting click here

6) Start your meeting click here

Feel free to share our manuals with others in your world with whom you may want to "meet" on Zoom. FYI, we are working on more manuals for advanced Zoom usage; they will come later.

After reading and using Manual #1 to download/install Zoom onto your computer, please read through manuals two and three. Then, you will be ready for one of our free online practice sessions.

STEP TWO: Register for a free online practice session

Danielle Vierra, Program Manager of our Kurland Center for Adult Learning & Living, is hosting the live, online sessions to give you a chance to practice how to:

• Join a meeting
• Attend a meeting
• Use various screen views, buttons, and written "chat"

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. There's no need to spend the full hour in the session. Please come at the beginning but leave when you like. Space is limited and offered on a first-come, first served basis. If demand is high, we will add more sessions.

Previous Issues
Zoom is being used by countless companies and universities; however, we do want you to know there have been some issues:

Of course, we only want you to join Zoom if you feel comfortable with it despite the previous security issues. If you'd rather not use Zoom, no worries! Most of all, we just hope you are well, connecting with others in a way that feels right for you, and taking good care of yourself (which usually includes social interaction of some sort).
